The time of the year when surroundings filled with nostalgic scents

The Memory

Every year, when April arrives, it carries me back to my childhood in Japan, to the quiet neighbourhood where cherry blossoms bloomed in gentle abundance around my home.

I don’t remember those moments clearly anymore, only the feeling they left behind. Petals drifted slowly through the air like soft memories, marking the arrival of spring not only through what was seen, but through what was felt. It existed only for a brief moment, yet something about it stayed with me.

This cherry blossom collection was created as a way of holding onto those memories, the tender colours of pale pink and innocent white, the sweet, almost weightless scent carried on the breeze, and the quiet calm that settled beneath the trees. Rather than simply documenting the blossoms as they appear, I try to hold onto what they feel like. I’m drawn to their quiet elegance, the way they seem almost as if they are daydreaming in the gentle light.

There is something deeply gentle about this season. It arrives quietly, filling the air with colour and light, and then disappears before we realise how quickly it has passed. Through these photographs, I hope to preserve that fleeting feeling, the tenderness of a season that never stays for long, and the quiet echoes of childhood it continues to carry.

Each piece is an offering to nostalgia and impermanence, inviting you to step into a gentle Japanese spring, a place where time slows, petals fall, and childhood wonder lingers just a little longer.

  • Haruka (春香) - Fragrance Carried by Spring

Haruka brings back a childhood moment of being surrounded by blooming trees, gathering fallen petals in my palms and tossing them gently into the air, creating a small spring shower around me.

A soft spring wind carries the petals as they drift away, and their sweetness begins to fill the air, surrounding both myself and the quiet space around me with the delicate fragrance of blossoms.

  • Miyabi (雅) - Refined Elegance

The gaze moves across a hill of cherry blossoms, filling the land as it reaches towards blue mountains in the distance. Imagined blossoms seem to continue endlessly, forming delicate layers through drifting light. The scene unfolds in quiet refinement.

Inspired by the classical Japanese idea of miyabi, the work speaks of elegance without excess, a beauty that emerges gently, like a whispered memory carried on the spring air.

  • Mai (舞) - Dance of Falling Petals

Haruka brings back a childhood moment of being surrounded by blooming trees, gathering fallen petals in my palms and tossing them gently into the air, creating a small spring shower around me.

A soft spring wind carries the petals as they drift away, and their sweetness begins to fill the air, surrounding both myself and the quiet space around me with the delicate fragrance of blossoms.

  • Harunagi (春凪) - Where Blossoms Meet Calm Ocean

Where cherry blossoms meet the quiet horizon of the sea. Soft petals drift through the gentle spring air, while distant blue waters stretch calmly beyond the blooming trees.

Harumi reflects the harmony of spring and ocean, a serene meeting of blossoms and sea, where the season unfolds with quiet beauty and light.

  • Kasumi (霞) - Spring Mist

I remember an early spring morning from my childhood, wandering quietly beneath the cherry blossoms as a soft mist drifted through the air. Their delicate petals seemed to fade gently into a veil of light and haze, and to my innocent mind, the blossoms almost appeared shy.

In Kasumi, spring dissolves into mist, echoing the way childhood memory preserves moments not as clear images, but as impressions of colour, air, and feeling.

  • Megumi (恵) - Blessing of Spring’s Arrival

The moment when spring begins to arrive, its warmth gently touching the icy blue landscape like a quiet blessing long awaited. Blossoms open beneath the soft sun, glowing in delicate golden light, while the distant mountains remain cool and blue, holding the last breath of winter.

Megumi captures the quiet nostalgia of this turning of the seasons. As warmth returns to the land, winter slowly loosens its hold. Light grows softer, blossoms awaken, and the world gradually shifts from the silence of winter into the living gentleness of spring.

  • Aika (愛花) - Beloved Blossom

In Aika, the blossoms appear with a quiet warmth, unfolding gently within the landscape as if held with care. Their soft presence reflects the feeling of cherishing small moments in nature, petals drifting in spring air, light touching the flowers, and the calm beauty that lingers in memory.
